This month I invited my good friend Lori Chamberland to write a “guest blog”. Lori has been practicing relaxation techniques since about 1985 and has a long list of credentials to support her work. Please check her out at www.balancerelaxationtherapy.com . I hope you enjoy this post & the terrific resources Lori has included.
They walk into the room and light it up. Bright eyes, a sunny smile, a champaign-like effervescence when they speak. They are alive with an inner radiance.
In Ayurveda, an ancient healing tradition, this inner radiance is called tejas. Literally translated tejas means “light” or “brilliance”. It is the energetic principle of fire in the mind and body. It can be sensed just above the belly button. Our inner fire or tejas allows us to transform food into nutrients and to digest and transform incoming information into knowledge. It gives us the power to discern between what we think we know and the truth. In other words, allows us to see things more clearly. When tejas is depleted it, leaves us feeling dull, listless and mentally foggy.
Working too long or too intensely, lack of sleep, information and sensory overload, and negative thinking can also snuff out our flame.
Summer Solstice is the perfect time to rekindle your inner radiance. Around June 21 the sun is at it’s zenith giving us the longest hours of sunlight of the year. Why not celebrate by soaking in the brilliance, warmth and illuminating qualities of the sun!
Here’s some tips to help you celebrate Summer Solstice and get your glow on.
1. Take time to have fun. Get outside in the sun for walks and swims. Enjoy outdoor dinner parties. Dance. Sing. Be joyous. Laugh until your solar plexus hurts.
2. Take time to rest. Be sure you replenish your energy reserves by getting good quality sleep. Ayurveda suggests that we sleep between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM. This is the time when our bodies and minds can recharge and replenish most efficiently. If you don’t sleep soundly or can’t get your eight hours of shut eye between these golden hours, consider Yoga Nidra. This guided meditation done laying down is one of the best ways to recoup lost energy stores. All you need to do is get comfortable and listen.
3. Do this gently energizing, sun inspired yoga and meditation practice that helps you tune into your solar plexus chakra. This energy center cultivates personal power, self-esteem and determination.
